Moana | Maui and Moana Shot Progression | Nicolas Prothais | @3D Animation Internships

Disney Animation Studio Animation directors: Amy Lawson Smeed and Hyrum Osmond Animator: Nicolas Prothais This shot is one of the most technical and difficult I ever animate so far. Constraints in maya are hierachical and unidirectionals. The hook is first contrained into Maui’s hand and Maui is constrained to the boat. But then, the chain of constraints has to be reversed as the hook drives Maui, as he turns and flys arround the boat. Eventually the hook is constrained back into Maui’s hand Left then right. (See the slow motion version ) At the same time, Moana is constrained by the boat and her animation rely on Maui’s action. Everytime I had to adjust the timing the animation, I had reajust, the boat, Maui and Moana and all the constraints. The simplest way I found to deal with that shot, was to contantly create and bake the contrainsts into the animation, back and forth on the fly, in order to create every poses. .
