“On patrol near the Iron Curtain“ M551 Sheridan of 2ACR, Bavaria 1974 diorama scene in 1/35 scale

Schon seit Jahren spiele ich mit dem Gedanken mich thematisch etwas mehr um die Zeit des Kalten Krieges zu kümmern, gerade in der deutschen Geschichte waren es sehr bedeutsame Jahre. Allerdings ist die Versuchung stets groß mich intensiver mit anderen Themenbereichen zu befassen. Das musste sich mal ändern! Mir hat schon immer der “MASSTER-Anstrich“ der amerikanischen Militärfahrzeuge in der zweiten Hälfte der 1970er Jahre gefallen, daher galt mein Hauptinteresse der möglichst naturgetreuen Umsetzung dieses Tarnanstrichs. Als Unterlage dafür habe ich mir den M551 Sheridan von Tamiya ausgesucht. Ich habe dem Modell das hauseigene Detailset von Tamiya spendiert, welches ein Alurohr und einige Photoätzteile beinhaltet. Für die Lackierung wollte ich zum ersten Mal AK Real Colors verwenden, da dieser Hersteller die passenden Farben für den “MASSTER-Anstrich“ im Sortiment hatte. Hierbei handelt es sich um sogenannte Lacquer-Farben, welche sich deutlich anders verhalten als die üblichen wasserbasierten Acrylfarben, die ich sonst verwende. Das führte zu einigen Problemen. Zuerst ist die Reinigung der Airbrush extrem aufwändig, darüber hinaus ist es nicht möglich die Oberfläche nochmals mit den selben Farben und einem Pinsel zu übermalen, da es sofort zu einer sehr unschönen Reaktion kommt. Daher habe ich nur den sandfarbenen Farbton benutzt und die braunen, grünen und schwarzen Tarnflecken mit Revell Aqua Acrylfarben aufgemalt, was am Ende eine gute Lösung war. Die Abziehbilder kamen von Echelon, der Bausatz von Tamiya beinhaltet nur Markierungen für Fahrzeuge in Vietnam. Mein Sheridan sollte aber in der Oberpfalz unterwegs sein. Gealtert wurde mit etwas Erde aus dem Garten und Ölfarben. Auf Lackschäden habe ich fast komplett verzichtet. Die Figuren stammen von Valkyrie und sind hervorragend detailiert. Diese wurden mit Revell Acrylfarben bemalt. Den Sockel habe ich bewusst etwas größer gestaltet als sonst, um dem Fahrzeug etwas mehr Platz zu geben und der Landschaft mehr Wirkung zu verleihen. Der Sockel besteht aus einem Holzbrett, Styropor, Mörtel, Modelliermasse und Erde. Die Grasbüschel stammen von Martin Welberg, die Bäume habe ich selbst aus diversen Zweigen hergestellt. Für das Herbstlaub habe ich Stanzwerkzeuge von AK Interactive verwendet. Damit wäre mein M551 Sheridan des 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment, stationiert in Bayern, fertig. Die Lackierung war eine Herausforderung, aber ich konnte dabei auch viel lernen. However, the temptation to deal with other topics can be pretty intense at times. I had to change this! I always liked the “MASSTER“ camouflage of US military vehicles during the second half of the 1970s, so my main interest was directed at recreating this camouflage pattern in a realistic way. As a canvas for that i picked the M551 Sheridan by Tamiya. I added the detail set by Tamiya, which comes with a metal gun barrel and a few photo-etched parts. For painting the camo i wanted to try out AK Real Colors for the first time, since this brand had all the necessary colors for the “MASSTER“ camo in its line. Those are so called lacquer paints, which work a lot different than the water based acrylics i usually use. This caused a few problems. First of all it is very tedious to clean the airbrush, furthermore it is not possible to paint over the surface with a brush using the same color again, since this leads to a very ugly reaction. Therefore i only used the sand color and painted on the brown, green and black blotches with Revell Aqua acrylics, which was a good solution in the end. The decals came from Echelon, since the kit by Tamiya only comes with markings for the Vietnam War. My Sheridan was meant to roll in the Upper Palatinate. For weathering i used earth from my garden and oil paints. I did not apply many paint chipping effects. The figures are by Valkyrie and are highly detailed. I painted them with Revell acrylics, too. I made the base a bit bigger than necessary on purpose in order to give the vehicle and the landscape a bit more space. The base consists of a wooden board, styrofoam, grout, modelling clay and earth. The grass tufts are by Martin Welberg, i made the trees myself using various branches. For the autumn leaves i used punch tools by AK Interactive. This completes my M551 Sheridan of the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment stationed in Bavaria.
