May 28 - June 13 1981 Following their appearance at the New York Palladium in 1980, The Clash had refused to play the city unless they could perform in a venue which they considered suitable, an unseated dance hall, so their scheduled seven night season at Bond’s, a night club/discotheque near Times Square, seemed a fair solution to the problems, as it would not involve long and tedious journeys in between gigs. It was also announced that no free press tickets would be available, although a limited number would be on sale at half price for a few selected writers. Although everything had seemed to be well planned, when the season began, chaos ensued. $10 tickets were selling for five times their face value, but a much greater problem ensued when the New York Fire Department announced after the first night’s show that for the rest of the season, they were going to enforce thelegal capacity of Bond’s, which was set at 1750 people. On the first night the NYFD said the audience amounted to nearly 4000 people, ruling it unsafe. After the second show the New York Building Department acquired a court order to close the club. When that was announced the crowd on the pavement outside went berserk, causing a riot in Times Square, and had to cleared by mounted police. Eventually, a compromise was reached when the City’s Building Commissioner agreed that The Clash could complet their season (by now extended to seventeen consecutive shows, which would allow everyone who had bought a ticket to attend a show) if security and fire escapes were improved. The show brought to you here is from the evening of Tuesday, June 9, 1981 This Is The Original 2xCD 2001 release by Pirate Radio Numero Uno.
