Mary Had a Little Lamb Origin Story
The nursery rhyme “Mary Had a Little Lamb“ is based on a true story involving a young girl named Mary Sawyer and her pet lamb. Here’s a brief overview of the story:
Mary Sawyer lived in Sterling, Massachusetts, in the early 19th century. One day in 1815, when Mary was about 9 years old, she brought her pet lamb to school against the rules. The lamb followed her into the schoolroom, causing a commotion but also amusing her classmates.
John Roulstone, a young student at Harvard, happened to be visiting the school that day and was inspired by the sight of Mary and her lamb. He wrote the original poem based on this event, which begins:
“Mary had a little lamb,
Its fleece was white as snow,
And everywhere that Mary went,
The lamb was sure to go.“
