Police in Marana say their officers had pulled the GMC Yukon over for a traffic violation and when their officer approached the SUV it sped away. The Marana police say they didn’t pursue it, but several agencies including Pinal County Sheriff deputies and Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers began to follow the vehicle as it sped towards Phoenix at speeds of over 100 miles an hour at times. Pinal County Sheriff officials say their deputies were able to use stop sticks on the SUV near Florence Boulevard, at milepost 195. The SUV kept going west on Interstate 10 and went onto State Route 143. The driver then got off the freeway at University Drive. That’s when sparks started coming from the front tire.
