This is a story of a young peasant girl named Giselle and her love for a nobleman named. Albrecht. Act 1: The ballet opens with a scene in a small village where Giselle lives. Giselle is in love with a man named Loys, who is actually Albrecht in disguise. Albrecht is engaged to be married to a noblewoman named Bathilde, but he has fallen in love with Giselle. Hilarion, a gamekeeper also in love with Giselle, becomes suspicious of Loys and discovers that he is actually Albrecht. Albrecht enters the forest to mourn Giselle’s death and is confronted by the Wilis. Myrtha commands them to kill him, but Giselle’s love for Albrecht saves him. Giselle’s spirit joins the Wilis, and she protects Albrecht from their wrath until dawn breaks and the Wilis must return to their graves. Albrecht has been left alone, mourning the loss of his beloved Giselle.
