A misunderstanding between Ferrari team-mates Jean Alesi and Gerhard Berger results in the latter shunting heavily at the Variante Ascari after the conclusion of the Saturday qualifying session for the 1993 Italian Grand Prix. Berger was unhurt, although shaken, but received an official reprimand for his role in the incident. In the race, Berger retired with an active suspension failure after completing 15 laps, but Alesi thrilled the tifosi with second place behind Damon Hill; his best result of the season.
