The flooding was caused by a glacial lake outburst located about 19 km (12 miles) north of the Alaska state capital. The flood destroyed several buildings along the Mendenhall River, according to the US National Weather Service. Two houses were completely swept away by water, and another was partially damaged. Several other residential buildings, including an apartment building that suffered extensive damage, are in danger of collapsing. Significant amounts of water are reported in previously flood-free areas, and significant river bank erosion has occurred along them. A series of weather disasters continues in Italy.
