BBC Weather Storm Ciara Week Ahead Saturday 8th February 2020 A strengthened Atlantic jetstream caused #StormCiara to form & deepen as it moved to the N of Scotland, bringing 50 - 60 mph widespread gusts with an intense squall line giving an isolated 86 mph gust at Manchester Airport in the afternoon. It was the strongest storm to hit the UK since 2016 & is memorable for the widespread amber warning for wind that covered the majority of Southern England & the strong winds that accompanied the storm. The strengthened jetstream also made the record for the shortest New York - London flight get broken with a British Airways Boeing 747 reaching Heathrow from JFK in 4 hours & 56 minutes, setting a record for the fastest-ever subsonic flight from New York to London. It reached speeds of more 800 mph as it rode the jetstream to London. The speed of the jetstream likely reached over 250 mph causing the plane to get to London so early with the aeroplane reaching speeds 300 mph more than expected
