Chain – Two of a kind Chain are an Australian blues band formed as The Chain in late 1968 with various incarnations and line up changes between 68 and 74 with notable inclusions Phil Manning, Wendy Saddington at the beginning and Matt Taylor. With Taylor on board by 1970, the band took on a tougher, bluesier edge. Best known then for the song “Black’n Blue“ they had several Australian chart entries and did well with the brilliant “Toward the Blues“ LP which is still on general release and probably the longest permanently available rock/blues album in Australia. In February 1973, Manning changed the name of his then group Mighty Mouse to Chain with: Mal Capewell on saxophone and flute (ex-Company Caine), Ian Clyne on organ (ex-The Loved Ones), Sullivan on bass guitar and Harvey on drums. During May 1973, Chain toured the country as support to the Muddy Waters Band without Matt Taylor and soon after teamed with that band’s James “Peewee“ Madison (guitar, vocals) and George “Mojo“ Beauford (vocals, harmonica) for recordings that would form part of Chain’s next LP, Two of a Kind. Chain’s band manager, Michael Gudinski had signed the band to his newly formed label, Mushroom Records which released two non-charting singles and then the new album in December 1973 with contributions from James Madison on guitar and George Beauford on vocals and harmonica. “Two of a Kind” was a comparatively low-key affair by the group’s standards. The album unfortunately sold in only moderate numbers and by 1974, Chain had undergone further personnel shifts. Despite the various incarnations and the lack of a stable line up, I still enjoy the record. It remains was the sort of record that any self-respecting aficionado of quality Oz Rock would consider essential for a well-rounded record collection ! Tracks 1.
