From the late 1960s to the early 1970s, under the program for developing a new main battle tank, various designs were considered. One of them was a variant known as Concept 1B with a low turret and manual loading of a 110 mm rifled gun with high ballistics. No metal prototype was produced. The Concept 1B is another oddity from the US Army’s arsenal (other than the AE Phase I); the most distinctive feature of the Concept 1B is the sleek and narrow turret design, which was designed to reduce its frontal surface area and protect its gunner who sat behind the gun breech. In World of Tanks this unique turret design served as a double-edged sword; the narrow turret design makes this tank almost immune to all shots when using hulldown positions, but the narrow turret also causes the weak turret side to be exposed when you’re aiming at another target.
