Every few years, Israel conducts an exercise against the Palestinians call “mowing the grass“. Where the IDF would kill off a bunch of Palestinian militants and destroy some infrastructure, thus preventing the Palestinians from being a threat. Now there was the assumption by Efraim Inbar and Eitan Shamir, the strategists who advocated this endless attritional war, that this cycle could go on perpetually so that a political solution would never be necessary. They however forget that humans like all things in nature however adapt or die. Like the Vietnamese, Hamas has learned to go underground. While I think Israel will ultimately prevail, the Palestinians have finally shown they are capable of true resistance. They have raised the price of Israel’s military actions against them and perhaps this will make Israel change their approach.
