Field of Mars, Lviv, Ukraine

There are now 448 Fallen Heroes in the Field of Mars next to Lychakiv Cemetery in Lviv. Their sacrifice bears witness to Ukraine’s steely pact written in blood to eject Russian invaders permanently from their land. There’s a daily ritual to say goodbye to Heroes: a military funeral that starts in one of the great churches in the ancient centre of Lviv. After that, the Fallen are conveyed to the town square, where a great number of the city’s residents gather to witness Taps, the lone bugle call for the Fallen Heroes. The procession then continues to the Field of Mars, where they are laid to rest in neat rows that keep growing. We can tell you the monthly rate but we’d rather not now. In addition to the heart-wrenching grief, we saw dignity and determination. There is a lot more space in the Field of Mars and we have no doubt that Ukrainians will continue to put their lives on the line for freedom from tyranny.
