Drum Lug Tuning - Even vs Uneven: Modulation/Beating Example

This video shows the difference in sound between an evenly tuned drum and an unevenly tuned drum. Often referred to as lug tuning, clearing the drumhead or equalising the drumhead. A number of different tunings are shown as examples, all recorded from the lug position on a drum. In each case the top (green waveform ) examples show a smooth clear decay to the sound. The uneven tunings at the bottom (red waveforms) have a definite modulation and acoustic ’beating’ as the sound of different frequencies on the drumhead clash and interact. Zooming in on the waveform it’s very clear to see the difference in the waveform of a well tuned drum against the waveform of the unevenly tuned drum.
