Russia destroys multiple US-made boats carrying Ukrainian soldiers
BOTH Russia and Ukraine claimed on Monday to have taken new military actions against each other, while the United States is planning to send a new multimillion-dollar aid package including armor-piercing depleted uranium ammunition to Kiev in the coming weeks.
Russia’s defense ministry said in a briefing released on Monday that it had thwarted Ukrainian attacks in Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kupyansk, and launched strikes on Ukrainian military personnel, equipment, deployment points, warehouses storing ammunition and shipyards.
The Russian Black Sea Fleet destroyed four boats carrying Ukrainian soldiers, and the Russia’s defense force has intercepted Mi-8 military helicopter and multiple drones, according to the briefing.
Meanwhile, the Ukrainian armed forces launched their counterattacks in the east, repelling dozens of Russian attacks in the past 24 hours in Bakhmut, Melitopol and other places, including air strikes on Russia’s air defense system and drones, the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces said on Monday.
Russia’s counterattacks also included downing of Ukrainian drones over Bryansk Oblast, thwarting Ukraine’s attempt to strike military facilities on the Russian territory, the Russian defense ministry said on Monday.
Ukraine has not commented on Russia’s claims.
Since the onset of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Ukraine has received military support worth around 100 billion U.S. dollars, of which more than half came from the United States, the Ukrainian media reported on Sunday.
Across the Atlantic in the United States, the Biden administration is planning to send armor-piercing depleted uranium munitions to Ukraine as part of a military package to be delivered in coming weeks, according to a media report.
The aid package, worth between 240 million and 375 million U.S. dollars, will for the first time include armor-piercing depleted uranium munitions that can be fired from U.S. Abrams tanks, according to the report.
Britain confirmed in April that it had delivered depleted uranium ammunition for the British main battle tanks Challenger 2 to Ukraine.
Russian President Vladimir Putin responded that Russia has a “sufficient stockpile“ of such cluster bombs and reserved the right to use them.
