Raise the Red Lantern Ballet

The story takes place in the 1920s. A young woman is stuffed in the bridal sedan chair by force to get married to an old man, becoming his concubine. She protests desperately but fails to avoid her tragic destiny. She idles away her life by watching operas in theaters and playing mahjong all day long. From time to time she would seek chances to meet her former lover, an actor who plays the role of a cavalier. But her secret meeting is revealed by he husband’s second concubine who has an ulterior motive. Her adultery is caught by her husband on the spot. But the second concubine receives nothing but a slash on the face from her husband. Frustrated in agony, she tears all the red lanterns in the courtyard. Their husband, also their master, becomes furious and puts his two concubines to death. Before dying, the two concubines forgive each other, forgetting their hatred.
