Celebrant were a death/black metal band from Belgium. Formed in 1994, they recorded 2 demos, 2 LPs and 1 EP. Wish I could find the demos but they are nowhere to be seen.
With a cover that will never cease to remind me of Immolation’s Dawn of Possession, Celebrant makes their black/death sound like an ode against christianity. There is such a celestial atmosphere, all their songs are drenched in it. Piano/organ breaks, choirs and chords held for a long time, giving it a melancholic and sorrowful emotion, derivative of their black metal influences. At the same time, they can still be aggressive and spiteful. Blast beats and skanks are to be found in the amidst the sorrow and pain, so worry not if that is what you came here looking for.
They do their shit and they do it well. It is not anything new or groundbreaking, especially if you listen to a lot of black/death, but it is a good gem, worth your 29 minutes for sure.
