Bronze sculpture “Angels Unawares” by Timothy Schmalz installed in St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican
The sculpture named “Angels Unawares” was sculpted by Canadian artist Timothy Schmalz and placed in St Peter’s Square (Vatican), reminding me of my boat that crossed the border from Vietnam to Malaysia in 1978. 140 men, women and children stand on a boat, representing the different waves of migration throughout history, of all religions, from many different countries. This number 140 corresponds to 140 statues of saints in St. Peter’s Square. The inspiration behind the work is taken from a biblical passage:
“Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.” Hebrew 13:2
