An underwater landslide is believed to have caused more than 35 earthquakes in the Izu Islands archipelago. Wave heights ranging from 30 to 60 cm (12 to 24 inches) were recorded on several Japanese islands. A tsunami of up to 60 cm (24 in) was recorded on Hachijo and some other Izu islands, as well as on an island in the Ogasawara chain in the Pacific Ocean, south of the Japanese capital. Waves measuring 30 cm (12 inches) reached Tateyama in Chiba Prefecture, and 40 cm (16 inches) reached Tosashimizu in Kochi Prefecture and Nakano in Kagoshim
