On this Day in 1943, the Russian Red Army staged a counterattack against the Germans. Here is a British Movietone report about the Battle of Stalingrad. Soldier climbs down sand bank, to mend broken communications, explosion in background. Mending wire, telephones HQ GS HQ receiving. Beaufighter planes in formation, explosions where bombs hit. Aerial shots of same. Bombs dropping. Timo-Vorishkolov Tanks go forward, formation (LS) of Me109’s, AA battery firing, gets hit, plane crashes (very good shot); burning plane. River Volga gunboats under way, Captain on bridge, approach bank, gunboats commence firing as troops jump ashore, various shots of same. Attack through smoke screen.
