I have gathered a few hours of real-time footage of the aurora borealis since the start of the 2022 season and they have just been dancing like crazy around Tromsø, Norway. We had spectacular shows of different shapes, colors and intensities.
For the first time ever, I am presenting to you 1 hour worth of ProRes RAW 4K footage. The final movie is about 280 Gb. Unfortunately, because of the compression, you won’t be able to enjoy it as I see it on my 5K monitor, but I believe the quality will still be good to give you the goose bumps- Some of the scenes are my all-time favorites, especially that crazy pink aurora and the red ones! Although you will see the film in a compressed codec, the ProRes RAW codec gave me an unprecedented latitude in post process to control shadows and highlights and keep most of those within the histogram. Because of the varying quality of your screen, some of the highlights might get burned (blob) and some of the shadows crushed (too dark), but overall you’ll experience a much better dynamic range than ever before in aurora footage. Also, you will probably see colors you are not used to in real-time aurora recording, as the Atomos Ninja V take advantage of the full bit depth of the sensor (16 bit converted to an effective 12 bit, but that’s still 68B colors!!).
I hope you enjoy the film! If you want to know more about the story behind, the gear and the specs used, consider becoming a member at where I write my blog posts. All I can say for now is that it was recorded with the Sony a7sIII Atomos Ninja V Sigma 20mm f1.4.
