This led to the making of “The Right to Rape“, an important documentary about a number of women who describe frankly how distressing it is to be raped by their husbands, and how in many ways it is worse than if it had been a stranger. Most women in the survey thought that English law should be changed, as it has been in Scotland, to make rape within marriage (marital rape or spousal rape) a crime. The survey revealed that this sort of violence is surprisingly very common, and the police feel unable to deal with it adequately while this legal position stands.
