West’s MaXXXine movie serves as a direct sequel to X 2022, the first film in the trilogy which centered on the film crew of an amateur porn shoot on a rural Texas farm in 1979, who get slaughtered one by one by an elderly woman named Pearl (also played by Mia Goth in old-age makeup). Goth also played the younger version of Pearl in the prequel movie. As the only survivor of the Texas Porn Star Massacre, MaXXXine will follow X’s final girl as she seeks to transition from adult film star to Hollywood movie star in the 80’s with a killer on the loose. The first trailer for A24’s MaXXXine has officially been released, providing a first glimpse of Goth reprising the role of Maxine Minx. The most notable appearance in the MaXXXine trailer is Pearl, whose return hints at Maxine’s potential fate in MaXXXine. Maxine sees the ghost of Pearl in the upstairs window of the Bates family’s house behind the motel. This moment is a callback to Maxine’s first sighting of Pearl in the first X movie upon the film crew’s arrival to the farm. As Maxine exits the van, she spots Pearl watching them from the upstairs bedroom window of the main house. At the end of X, Maxine manages to narrowly escape the massacre when the backfire from shooting Howard’s shotgun causes Pearl to fall backward and become incapacitated, allowing Maxine to bolt. However, Pearl hits a nerve when she tells Maxine that she’s “not special“ and that her beauty and desirability “will all be taken from [her].“ This provokes Maxine to run over Pearl, crushing her skull and killing her, before driving away, leaving all the dead bodies behind. It’s safe to assume that it’s only Pearl’s ghost that Maxine sees in the Psycho house, since she was practically decapitated in X.
