Karajan signed with DGG a short while before this session. The 31 year old conductor is at the helm in front of Germany’s most prominent orchestra making his first recording of a symphony he would revisit numerous times. 1939 was also the year when high fidelity LPs and television were just on the horizon... all delayed by WWII which broke out later in the year. The present recording gives us a look at where sound recording was before the conflict disrupted everything.
