Astor Piazzolla’s “Spring“ (Tango)

“Spring“ Tango JollyGul presents Astor Piazzolla’s “Spring“ which is in a musical genre that the composer developed from traditional elements of the tango. Astor Pantaleón Piazzolla (1921 – 1992) was an Argentine tango composer, bandoneon player, and arranger. His works revolutionized the traditional tango into a new style termed nuevo tango, incorporating elements from jazz and classical music. A virtuoso bandoneonist, he regularly performed his own compositions with a variety of ensembles. In 1992, American music critic Stephen Holden described Piazzolla as “the world’s foremost composer of Tango music”. A bandoneon is a concertina or accordion like instrument. Tango is a partner dance and social dance that originated in the 1880s along the Río de la Plata, the natural border between Argentina and Uruguay. The musical style that was created with the dance is also called ’tango’. Many variations of this dance currently exist around the world. In 2009, UNESCO approved a joint proposal by Argentina and Uruguay to include the tango in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists. Astor Piazzolla’s “Spring” (Primavera Porteña) was composed in 1970 and is part of a set of his four tango compositions “The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires“. Tango traditionalists were originally horrified by his new style of tango but he is now widely respected. This music performance is given by Gabriela Leżańska (Violin), Michalina Jastrzębska (Cello) and Jakub Niewiadomski (Piano). ---------------------- “Spring“ Tango Instrumental Composer: Astor Piazzolla Violin: Gabriela Leżańska Cello: Michalina Jastrzębska Piano: Jakub Niewiadomski Producer: Jakub Niewiadomski Video Publisher:
