The Kipping Escape: BJJ traditionally teaches 2 basic pin escapes from the mounted position - the knee-elbow or hip escape (aka the shrimp) and the bump and roll (aka upa). The kipping escape is kind of a cross between them both. It has elements of a bridge to offset balance and weight like the bump-and-roll, while it uses the wedges and frames of the knee-elbow hip escape. But it is very much its own animal, and learning to use it adds tremendous depth to your escapes and counters. Especially useful in no-gi submission grappling, the kipping escape can create enough space not only to return to the guard but to start ashi garami attacks right away. Here we go through a few of the basic elements of a successful kip from the bottom of the mount.
