Air Raids / Public Putting On Gas Masks (1939)

Unused / unissued material - paperwork dates footage as 1939. London. Various street scenes; ARP (Air Raid Precaution) wardens walking past an air raid shelter, talking on a street corner; a group of ARPs rush to get into parked cars labelled ’Stretcher Party - Westminster’. People walk along crowded streets and look in shop windows (looks like Oxford Street). In an ARP warden’s room a woman sitting with her young son and husband is shown how to put on her gas mask; she removes her hat and puts the gas mask on. Cut to M/S of the family in their living room; the mother knits, the boy plays with a puzzle and the father reads. Quick shots of fighter planes in the sky and an ARP warden walking along the street in protective rubber suit and waving his warning rattle suggest an air raid. The father gathers up their gas masks that sit in boxes and bags on a sideboard; they put them on then carry on with what they were doing. M/S of the woman knitting with her gas mask on.
