This film is presented by Encyclopedia Britannica (:18). It shows a narrative told through the eyes of a dog about his adventure with the police department. It opens with a scene of a yellow family home with a small dog on the porch (:34). As a patrol vehicle goes by, the dog tries to guess what the codes might mean (:54). The dog searches through the grass for his owner’s wrist watch (1:22). The dog realizes he is lost and continues to run in the wrong direction landing himself in an unfamiliar city (1:45). A police officer; Officer Carter, approaches the lost dog (2:11). Carter checks the dog’s tags in order to return him home. Carter then radios headquarters (2:37) over the dog. The officer fills out a card informing the owner of a vehicle that they had left their keys within the ignition (3:34). The officer’s patrol car is seen parked near a Sears store (3:47). As he approaches the vehicle, the town name of Elgin is seen pointing to the location of the film as Illinois (3:58). The dog hops into the vehicle with both officers (4:23). Various ways in which the law enforcement officers help the community are showcased (4:39). Carver patrols the city on foot, though law enforcement also uses vehicle (4:50), motorcycle (4:58), horseback (4:59) or by boat (5:01). Signs are pointed to which direct traffic (5:12) or prohibit animals from city parks (5:18). Law enforcement study laws in the library (5:32). A speed limit sign is changed here (5:37). An officer writes a woman a ticket (5:46). The officer that picked up Carter and the dog gets a radio call and takes the dog with him (5:57). The officer stops to speak with a man whose store had been robbed (6:48). A detective arrives on scene (7:00) and begins searching for evidence (7:16). Detective Brown uncovers finger prints on the register (7:35). At the doorway, the detective finds more evidence (7:44). The evidence is checked at the police laboratory (7:53). Along the way the dog begins to understand the necessity of the police in his home town (8:18). A patrol vehicle leads a parade through suburban streets (8:26). The police often work with city planners to help solve issues (8:39). Another officer sits with an elderly woman in a park (8:45). Education is provided for the youth as well on laws (8:49). Signs and books help the youth protect their bikes from theft (8:53). The dog is brought into a police station for the first time (9:13) to be sent to Alice, the leader of the Animal Control Office (9:20) until his owners picked him up. Officers ready themselves for one of the three eight hour shifts (9:57). The dog watches the shift commander go over the men’s uniforms during shift change (10:09). He then spots a poster requesting volunteers for the K-9 unit (10:33). Future police officers undergo physical training tests (11:08) at the Police Academy. Other new officers learn how to investigate traffic accidents (11:36), how to write up reports (11:41) and how to testify in court (11:48). Police practice their marksmanship at target practice (11:57). The dog stops in at the communications center (12:08) and watches a woman operate the information computer (12:35). He then heads for the jail (12:51). One man receives his mugshot (13:06). The dog envisions himself being caught with committing a crime and getting locked into one of the cells in the jail (13:27). His family then arrives to pick him up and return him home (13:46). Officer Carter arrives and greets the family and their returned dog (14:09). The film wraps up as a local newspaper is shown which featured the dog and his story (14:28). The film closes with a special thank you to the Elgin Police Department of Elgin, Illinois (14:54).
