Выгоняя зиму и предавая огню ее чучело, славяне по факту предавали злобную старуху смерти. А усопших у язычников было принято поминать именно блинами. Блины же одновременно олицетворяли солнце. Вероятнее всего, в истории появления Масленицы произошло слияние традиций поминания предков и почитания символа солнца, из-за чего блины стали традиционным праздничным кушаньем. Кроме этого, в конце зимы у крестьян подходили к концу запасы пищи, заготовленные с осени, и вполне вероятно, что в конце зимы из припасов оставалась только мука. Однако в изобилии было масло, поскольку коровы телились, как правило, зимой, а с появлением теленка в доме хозяев в достатке были любые продукты, которые можно приготовить из коровьего молока. Скорее всего, от этого и произошло название праздника — Масленица, период, когда блины, маленькие солнца, обильно сдабривали маслом. После принятия христианства Масленица стала приходиться на неделю перед Великим постом, которую еще называют мясопустом. Употреблять мясо в этот период уже запрещено, зато на молочные продукты ограничения не распространяются. Поскольку блины символизировали солнце, весну, тепло, урожай и в конечном итоге достаток в доме, их было принято печь и есть как можно больше. А потому для них были придуманы различные добавки, помимо масла. Так, с учетом ограничений, накладываемых церковным календарем, помимо масла славяне подавали блины с: икрой, рыбой, сыром, медом, вареньем, сметаной, капустой, творогом.
