Human rights groups urge BIE members to vote against Saudi Arabia’s 2030 World Expo bid

아랍 인권단체들 “사우디 엑스포 개최 반대” More than a dozen international human rights groups have jointly called for voters for the 2030 World Expo to vote against Saudi Arabia’s bid due to the country’s poor human rights record. In an open letter to the BIE --the World Expo organizer --15 rights groups, including Democracy for the Arab World Now, European Saudi Organization for Human Rights, and Freedom House and the Human Rights Foundation said BIE member states should vote against Saudi’s candidacy during the voting next week. The groups said Saudi Arabia “routinely commit human rights abuses such as arbitrary detention, target women’s rights activists, and violation of freedom of expression“ and that hosting the expo will “serve as a cover-up for systemic human rights abuses“. Saudi Arabia’s capital city Riyadh is in a three-way race against Busan and Rome to host the expo. #World_Expo #SaudiArabia #human_rights #BIE #Bureau_International_des_Expositions #economy #Arab #European_Saudi_Organization #아랍_인권단체들 #사우디아라비아 #엑스포 #Arirang_News #아리랑뉴스 📣 Facebook : 📣 Twitter : 📣 Homepage : 2023-11-24, 09:00 (KST)
