On this day last year, Ukrainian forces shelled directly outside the hotel I was staying in, the last of 5 shells on central Donetsk that morning. When the last shell hit next to the hotel, it blew the windows & lobby glass doors in. I’d just left the lobby half a minute prior, thankfully. Otherwise I would have been lacerated with glass & shrapnel, at best. When the shelling stopped & journalists went outside to inspect the damage, we saw the bloodied dead body of a woman who had been walking next to the hotel when the NATO-standard 155mm caliber shell landed. Five other civilians were killed that morning, including an 11 year old girl who was due to leave to continue her ballet studies, in St Petersburg. Her ballet teacher, a once world wide renowned ballerina, and her grandmother were also killed, bodies torn apart. The first shells targeted the Donbass Opera, roughly 200 metres north of the hotel, where a memorial funeral service was taking place for the heroic Gorlovka commander, Olga Kachura, killed the day prior. The next three shells continued closer & closer to the hotel, the last landing 50 metres away (according to a journalist I spoke with who was outside when it fell) and then directly next to the hotel. Many journalists I’ve spoken with since feel the hotel was being deliberately targeted due to hosting a number of journalists. Given that other hotels in Donetsk & other cities were definitely targeted by Ukrainian attacks, the one I was in probably was also intentionally targeted.
