It displays the characteristic lively and upbeat tempo of the gigue, a popular dance form during the Baroque period, known for its energetic rhythms. Like the Bourrée, the Gigue is drawn from the violin Partita No. 3, transcribed by Bach himself for the lute and frequently played on the classical guitar. It maintains the A and B structure typical of the dance suites of the time (AABB). The ’A’ section is written in a joyful E major, while the ’B’ section provides a contrast by modulating to the more introspective key of C-sharp minor, before a return to the jubilant E major.
