By the end of the autumn of 1654, Moscow was a terrible sight. The courtyards with the sick were boarded up, so it was unclear whether there were still people alive there. The churches were silent: there were no services behind the death of the parable, no bells calling for prayer. The city is extinct. The bodies of the dead were taken to the outskirts, given a funeral service-if, there was anyone to bury-and buried in pits for the burial of those who died from mass epidemics. The consciousness of the people of that time associated the plague attack with the wrath of God: the plague was sent down as a punishment for transgressions.
