1983 European Grand Prix highlights

Thumbnail photo credit: XPB Images The cancellation of the New York Grand Prix meant that the world championship was in need of a substitute race. Up to the mantle stepped Brands Hatch, site of the British Grand Prix in even-numbered years, to host the first European Grand Prix in many years. Two consecutive retirements for Alain Prost had allowed René Arnoux and Nelson Piquet to close right in on the Frenchman’s championship tally, though Patrick Tambay would be in need of a good result in Britain if he wanted to depart for South Africa with a shot at title glory. Championship standings after 13 rounds: 1. Prost (51) 2. Arnoux (49) 3. Piquet (46) 4. Tambay (40) 5. Rosberg (25)
