The three nations have accused the bloc of working under foreign influence and not helping them in fighting terrorism. The ties between the three nations and the West African bloc deteriorated after subsequent military coups in the countries. Military coups took place in Niger in July 2023, Burkina Faso in 2022 and Mali in 2020.
