LIVE: View from Gaza’s Rafah camp amid Israeli bombardment

View from a tent camp in Rafah where many Gazans are displaced. The Zawaida flour mill had already run out of fuel and was being used as a shelter when the Israeli army arrived in central Gaza. The Palestinians fled, but when they returned as fighting died down they found a scene of destruction. “I could not imagine the extent of the devastation,” the owner, Younis Abu Zayed, said. The equipment, imported from Italy, was lying shattered. “There were modern machines, plastic machines and lathes,” he said. “We had invested everything we earned into this business, since 2008.” The mill is just one of a string of factories and other industrial complexes that have been destroyed by the Israeli army, making it hard to see how normal life can resume in the territory even when the war ends.
