Earthquake in East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea | Earthquake in Papua New Guinea 2024

A moderately shallow magnitude 7.0 earthquake was reported early morning near Wewak, East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea. According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Sunday, March 24th, 2024, at 6:22 am local time at a moderately shallow depth of 63.5 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency which listed the quake at magnitude 7.3. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 6.6. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
