Figure Eights with Puck Control Drills

Gretzky used to do drills as simple as this growing up skating on his grandma’s pond in Brantford, ON. Coordinating your stickhandling with your crossovers and turns is one of the best things you can do to quickly up your skills. It’s such a basic fundamental skill yet many elite level skaters can’t do it without losing the puck here and there (like me). Use your imagination and imagine each turn you’re making you’re stepping around another player, and each crossover you’re practicing separating from the opposition. Practice simple drills like these ones and you’ll all of sudden have more confidence to hold onto the puck, keep possession, carry the puck into the other team’s zone and create more scoring opportunities.
