Russian history from Rurik to modern days: 💠 WHO ARE THE SLAVS? So, who are the Slavs? Slavs are the largest ethnolinguistic group in Europe. Present-day Slavic people are classified into East Slavs (chiefly Belarusians, Russians, and Ukrainians), West Slavs (chiefly Czechs, Moravians, Poles, and Slovaks), and South Slavs (chiefly Bosniaks, Bulgarians, Croats, Macedonians, Montenegrins, Serbs, and Slovenes). The early Slavs were a diverse group of tribal societies who lived during the Early Middle Ages (approximately the 5th to the 10th centuries) in Eastern Europe.  The first written use of the name “Slavs“ dates to the 6th century when the Slavic tribes inhabited a large portion of Central and Eastern Europe.
