Booker T - Don’t Stop Your Love (Dave Lee fka Joey Negro Paradise Mix)

Available now - “Don’t stop your love” is quite an unusual song. The veteran multi instrumentalist Booker sings in low baritone voice, whilst the chords move around on an odd time signature, I didn’t notice this until I started remixing it but one of things that probably makes it more interesting. These less standard progressions are much more likely to come out of a jam session between musicians, something which was more common in the band era. Where as one person making music on a programme like Logic with a keyboard tends to end up in the more standard 2/4/8 bar cycles. The original is produced Michael Stokes (who has done some great work with Creative Source, Natures Divine and many others) and has a quite rocky low 8ths guitar harmony mixed loud which takes the roll of the bass, whilst the actual slapped bass isn’t so upfront. I decided to get rid of that low 8th guitar and get Julian Crampton to replay the slap bass but slightly changing the rhythm to something more driving. Like any drastic change made to a classic old tune, I’m sure some people will prefer it as it was. If that’s the case the original will always be there for them. Over the course of doing a remix I try using the elements many different ways but ultimately I’ve got to follow my own gut instincts and not worry too much what others might think. Whatever I do someone won’t like it.
