Ukraine begins withdrawing from Avdiivka as Russians raise flag over key compound

Ukraine has begun withdrawing its troops from Avdiivka, after defending the city for seven years from Russian separatists and Vladimir Putin’s army. The retreat began February 16 from the southern part of the city as Kyiv’s troops were in danger of being surrounded by the Russians and eliminated. Drone footage captured Russian troops raising their flag and a Soviet victory flag over Zenit, a previous Ukrainian stronghold which had been fought over since 2015. Other footage showed heavy Russian bombardment of the city which made further defence difficult, and attempts by Ukraine’s 3rd Assault Brigade to cover the retreat and protect their comrades as they fell back.
