More than 300 people have so far been killed in Israel, including both soldiers, police and civilians. About 2,000 people have been injured and about 100 civilians and soldiers were kidnapped during the Hamas assault. So far 313 Palestinians have died, according to the health ministry in Gaza. An Israeli tourist is also reported to have been shot dead in Egypt. Jake Marlowe, 26, a British citizen, is missing near Gaza. He had been providing security at a party in Israel when Hamas fighters overran the area and took hostages. The Israeli prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, has told Israelis they are going into a “long and difficult war”. Hamas, which controls Gaza, is separate from the internationally recognised Palestinian Authority, which runs the parts of the West Bank not under Israeli control. It was proscribed as a terrorist organisation in its entirety by the UK in 2021.
