Coups in Gabon & Niger in Africa spell an end to ’Francafrique’? The term “Franceafrique“ has recently regained prominence over the past few months. This resurgence is not unexpected, considering that all the coups that have unfolded during this period occurred exclusively in former French colonies. While the term “Françafrique“ ostensibly includes all the relationships and partnerships between France and its former African colonies, however, its practical manifestation reveals a strategy by which the French maintain their grip on these erstwhile territories. “Franceafrique“ signifies the substantial influence wielded by France in Africa, an influence that has adversely impacted several nations. Consequently, it comes as little surprise that numerous former French colonies are now advocating for the withdrawal of all things French from their respective countries. The objective of Franceafrique was to establish military bases and maintain dominion over the resources of Central and West African countries. This pursuit persisted even after these nations attained political sovereignty. Emmanuel Macron, the current President of France, emerges as a distinctive figure in this context as he is the first French leader born after the end of France’s colonial rule in Africa. During his 2017 campaign, Macron garnered attention for his proclamation that colonialism should be classified as a crime against humanity. He also expressed that he was from a generation that refrains from imposing directives on Africa. However, a question arises: Did Macron genuinely believe he could abstain from meddling in African political affairs? Probably not.
