Death from the sea

Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004, tsunami that hit the coasts of several countries of South and Southeast Asia in December 2004. The tsunami and its aftermath were responsible for immense destruction and loss on the rim of the Indian Ocean. The tsunami killed at least 300,000 people across a dozen countries, with Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Maldives, and Thailand. On March 11, 2011, a magnitude-9 earthquake shook northeastern Japan, unleashing a savage tsunami. According to the Japan Reconstruction Agency, nearly 400,000 buildings were destroyed or irreparably damaged and another 750,000 were partially destroyed across the country in March 2011. Nearly 16,000 people were killed and 2,500 are still listed as missing.
