Vlog + English: Books & Reading (vocabulary to speak about books!)
- I tell you about my bookshelf and what books I like to read
- I teach you great words to talk about books, also good for exams
some slang expressions really used by native speakers!
Words and expressions from the video:
to get through a book - to read a book till the end
I hardly ever get through more than 3 or 4 books a month.
to borrow a book from a friend/ from the library - to temporarily take a book
I never borrow books from the library - it’s quite poor in my city; I can never get hold of the book I want!
chick-lit - books for women
I’ve got a friend who only reads chick-lit - she likes to get carried away by a nice light plot.
summer reading - easy reading for summer
This book is not a serious read; but it’s good for your summer reading list.
fiction - novels and stories that is written about events not based on real people and facts
I still find it hard to read fiction in English. There are so many metaphors, subtle humour, play on words - I can’t always grasp the meaning.
non-fiction - biographies, popular science, etc. - books about real life
I normally buy one new non-fiction book a month. And I usually go for what’s on the ’trending now’ shelf.
a book by [author]
One of my favourite contemporary novels is A History of the World in 10 1/2 Chapters by Julian Barnes.
self-help (books) - books that help you improve yourself and develop as a person
I’ve got a lot of self-help books. I can recommend you some if you wish!
a go-to book - a book you like and often read
7 Habits of Highly Effective People is my go-to book in what concerns self-development.
to opt for something - choose something instead of something else
I sometimes opt for something more serious and hard-going.
a hard-going book - a book that is hard to read
Some popular science books, like Homo Deus by Yuval Noah Harari for instance, are quite hard-going yet really gripping.
to ring a bell - remind you of something
Does the name of Yuval Noah Harari ring a bell to you?
a must-read - a book that the speaker believes is absolutely worth reading
I think Essentialism is a must-read in the realm of personal development and self-help.
to be very now - to dwell on current topics
This book is very now, isn’t it? Everyone wants to be more effective.
an e-reader - an electronic book
I prefer reading paper books, but I still take an e-reader with me any time I go on holiday.
it can hold lots of books - it has enough memory for many books
An e-reader can hold hundreds if not thousands of books.
paper-back/ hard-back books - books in a paper or a cardboard cover
I often buy paper-back books because they are cheaper.
