Eye of Shepherdess (US) - Howling Remnants of a Forgotten Race (EP 2023)

The absolutely rivetting and much antecipated return of the Eye of Shepherdess, the project which followed the excellent Batilda. Originally recorded in 2020, and now unearthed, this release follows up to the act’s self-titled debut full-length in the best way possible, going even a step further when it to guitarwork. The guitar riffing is even more intricate, with incredible riffs following one after another brimming with ecstatic serpentine melodicism and sanguine mastery. As the label puts it, “malformed heathen black metal“, in fact Eye of Shepherdess seems to pickup a lot on the more pagan an heathen strains of Black Metal, but, similarly to some of its great contemporaries in Kestrel or Grizelda, gives it a hallucinatory, frantic twist and triumphalism which puts it in a class of its own, as well the absolutely unhinged vocal performance. Absolutely perfect. The last track, Sky-Vault, is a bonus track included on the most recent copies, an excellent hypnotic Black Metal piece, reminiscent of Servitutem. This tape also marks the foreshadowed return of the great Atavistic Insurgence, commemorating this year it’s 10th in existence.
