Traoré was born in Kera, in the commune of Bondokuy, Burkina Faso, on March 14, 1988 and has devoted his life to serving his nation. He was renowned for being quiet but very talented at his high school in Bobo-Dioulasso where he studied Geology, after completing his elementary schooling in Bondokuy. While attending the prestigious University of Ouagadougou in 2006, Ibrahim Traoré became an active member of the Association of Muslim Students, ultimately graduating with honors. In 2009, he made the decision to join the Burkina Faso Army and underwent specialized anti-aircraft training in Morocco. Following his training, Captain Ibrahim Traoré was stationed in Kaya, a town in northern Burkina Faso, where he served as a valuable member of an infantry unit. Ibrahim Traoré gained recognition in 2018 as a courageous soldier in MINUSMA after rebel attacks in the Sahel region. Following this, he returned to Burkina Faso to assist in operations against the increasing insurgency of jihadists. Traoré actively participated in various counter-insurgency actions in the country’s northern region, including the Otapuanu Offensive in 2019. In 2020, he was promoted to the rank of captain. In January 2022, Traoré played a role in the coup that ousted President Paul-Henri Sandaogo de Miba. Consequently, on October 6, he was appointed interim president and given the responsibilities of head of state and supreme commander of the armed forces. Many supporters of the January coup were disappointed with de Miba’s failure to tackle the Islamist insurgency. Traoré later revealed that he and other officers had tried to persuade de Miba to prioritize addressing the insurgency, but ultimately, he was overthrown due to his diverging ambitions.
