The military dictatorship of Niger has ended a military cooperation agreement with the United States, citing a violation of sovereignty. This has led to the loss of many Western soldiers attempting to combat jihadist attacks in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. The loss of Niger Air Base 201 would leave a significant operational gap for the United States, as it provides a vital airbase for the Pentagon in the Sahel and Sahara regions.
European efforts to curb terrorist attacks in Niger have been detrimental, with Mali and Burkina Faso severing ties with the Western counter-terrorism response. The European Union, along with France and the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas), has terminated all agreements with Niamey on financial assistance and security cooperation. The junta has also placed a contentious EU anti-migration bill on hold, and diplomatic immunity has been withdrawn from the EU capacity building mission.
The European Union continues to exert influence in the Sahel region, but member nations must collaborate to reach a consensus. The US has spent millions on military aid, development assistance, and military force in Niger, and the US has delayed labeling the coup as a coup until October. If a second Trump administration takes office, they may withdraw from the Sahel situation.
