ENGINE ROOM LULLABY (53) - Industrie 2VD5 aboard the Arethusa

Since 1985, Sylvia Maessen ( ) is the owner of the tugboat Arethusa, that was built in 1927 and was baptized Ina at the shipyard Zuidam in Haarlem for the sanitation department of that town of which Sylvia has bought the Arethusa. In 1999 she had the former engine, a four cylinder Kromhout-Gardner, replaced by the current Industrie 2VD5 from 1939. Sylvia lubes the poppet valves, cranks the flywheel and puts the starting air on it. Next she takes out sailing on the Vecht, showing off the looks and sounds of the Arethusa. Vincent Horbach of Rederij Prinsengracht ( ) in Amsterdam recommends the engine. ‘These engines should be made part of the Monument Act like all maritime heritage.’ 00:00 Intro 01:03 Lubing poppet valves 01:58 History of the engine 02:28 Cranking the flywheel 03:13 Starting the engine 04:04 Rocking rocker arms 04:56 Sailing away 06:08 About boat and engine 07:33 At the helm 07:58 Double bass 08:45 Events 09:07 Maneuvers 1 10:28 About the name 11:20 Maneuvers 2 12:53 Stopping the engine
