Hubertus von Alelunxen. Notation. 2011

Hubertus von Amelunxen, German theorist and art historian, lecturing on a 2008 exhibition ’Notation’, a collaboration by Amelunxen, Dieter Appelt and Peter Weibel. The exhibition collected works from all realms of art from the 20th century, and placed them in relationships with one another. During the lecture, Amelunxen focuses on the fundamental axioms of the exhibition, in particular the intimacy that artistic forms of the last century had with scientific calculation, precision and the overarching ontological implications of the 20th century’s scientific theories and developments. Amelunxen pays particular atention to music composition, especially the work of Iannis Xenakis, John Cage and Pierre Boulez, before turning to the thought of Benjamin and Adorno. Moreover, Amelunxen discusses how ’Notation’ sought to invetigate a series of themes or problems thought has tarried with for the last century, for example: freedom-determination, finitude-infinity, and movement-rest
